Cultivating Global Talent

Preparing Today’s Students for Tomorrow’s Global Challenges

Director, Gunma University Global Initiative CenterMutsumi Iijima, Director, Gunma University Global Initiative Center

Today’s world presents complex challenges – growing inequality, social instability, and global security concerns – that can seem daunting to those striving to make a positive impact. At Gunma University, we believe the answer lies in providing young people with the knowledge and skills needed to lead with confidence. Our objective is to prepare students not only to succeed but also to thrive in a diverse, dynamic global society. What skills are essential to face this changing world?

Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) describes global talent as individuals who think independently, communicate effectively across cultures, and who can bridge differences to bring about new perspectives. From this, we have identified three key areas for developing such global competencies:

1. Language Skills and Communication Competence
2. Self-Motivation, Initiative, Adaptability, and Teamwork
3. Cross-Cultural Understanding and a Strong Sense of Identity

True communication is not only about expressing oneself but also about listening deeply to others, understanding diverse perspectives, and fostering inclusive environments. Developing fluency in both Japanese and foreign languages provides a foundation for these abilities.
Self-driven individuals are empowered to make purposeful decisions, adapt to change, and cultivate resilience. We encourage our students to take risks, learn from challenges, and approach life with confidence.

A deep appreciation for Japanese culture and identity further enhances their capacity to understand and respect differences, ensuring an open-minded and respectful approach to cultural diversity.
At Gunma University Global Initiative Center, we focus on these competencies with a focus on three key areas: Language Education, International Exchange, and the Global Frontier Leader Program (GFL).

Our Mission Statement

  • Language Education: Cultivating globally skilled communicators and problem-solvers through our comprehensive foreign language programs, which extend from undergraduate through graduate levels.
  • Global Frontier Leader Program (GFL): Preparing students to become informed, adaptable leaders with a broad worldview, strong analytical skills, and effective leadership qualities.
  • International Exchange: Expanding students’ intercultural awareness and teamwork abilities through exchanges with partner institutions worldwide, enabling them to engage with diverse perspectives while strengthening their own identities.
